Overview of Zhuhai

Updated: 2018-09-14

Once merely formed by the sea, today Zhuhai is prospering because of the sea.

Beginning as an empty group of islands cut off from land, Zhuhai emerged as a populated “City of a Hundred Islands” during the long process of geological changes in the Pearl River Estuary.

Zhuhai is one of the birthplaces of China's marine civilization. As early as 6,000 years ago, the island ancestors of native people began proliferating here.  Throughout generations of change, they created a splendid prehistoric fishery civilization, and left for posterity many important relics of prehistoric marine civilization, such as the cliff carvings at Baojing Bay.

Zhuhai is an important thoroughfare along the southeast sector of the "Maritime Silk Road." Since the Han and Tang dynasties, China has exported ceramics, tea, and other products to trade ports in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe along the southeast section of the road, thus creating mutual understanding and bringing about exchanges with different civilizations.

Zhuhai is important logistically to maritime exploration.  "Foreign ships scrambling for trade are relevant to state-operated firms; the Cross-Gate Channel between Zhuhai and Macao provides access to the Atlantic and Indian oceans."

The Channel is an important part of the route newly blazed by Europeans from the 16th to 19th century. It not only promotes trade between East Asia and the Indian Ocean, Africa, Europe, and Latin America, but also links East and West more closely. Globalization has become an irreversible trend.

Zhuhai is the forerunner in China's Opening Up to the outside world. In 1980, Zhuhai became one of the earliest special economic zones in China and began to explore how to Open Up to the outside world.

A series of pioneering initiatives, such as China's first enterprise in the processing and compensation trade and first Sino-foreign joint tourism company were established in Zhuhai. Hence, Zhuhai has made great contributions to the development of China's Opening Up.

As the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge will soon open to traffic and construction of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Marco Greater Bay Area is accelerating, Zhuhai is well-positioned for opportunities of the 40th anniversary of China’s Reform & Opening Up in this new era.

As a window to and experimental field for Reform & Opening Up, Zhuhai is fully participating in the construction of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Marco Greater Bay Area while building the China (GDFTZ) Hengqin with high standards and high quality. It is actively engaged in international competition and cooperation while striving to form a new pattern of all-around Opening.

In the future, as an important part of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Marco Greater Bay Area, Zhuhai will perform more confidently on the stage of world economic and trade cooperation as well as people-to-people exchanges with a more energetic and high-spirited attitude!
