Hengqin New Area is inviting bids for the design of a 3-sq-km (300-hectare, 740-acre) national pilot wetland park that must have a diverse ecosystem while attracting a vast range of birds.

A primary conceptual illustration has been released to provide a basis for the design process.

Located on the west side of Hengqin Island, the park would start from the proposed West Qinhai Road in the north, near West Ring (Huandao) Dike in the east, connect to the elevated highway in the south, and stretch to the Modaomen Waterway in the west. The planned construction area is about 327.4 hectares (809 acres) with 79.4 percent allocated for wetlands.

Constructing a stable estuarine wetland ecosystem is the top objective. The project is also expected to offer a restored coastal ecosystem, display of various wetland ecological resources, unique nature contacts, and public education. The park will be made into a comfortable home for birds of many different species.

According to Zhuhai Da Heng Qin Holdings Co, the contractor, it will be divided into areas for wetland conservation, restoration and reconstruction, management service, and publicity and exhibition, with a fifth area reserved for other uses.

Leisure and recreational activities such as cruising, cycling, mangrove exploration, fruit picking, and fishing will be woven into the full use of banana-based fishponds in the park and on coastal waterways.

In addition, there will be experience-based science education in a themed center, a wetland ecological culture corridor, bird-watching platform, and water-viewing deck, topped off by wetland adventures and promotion of environmental protection.

The park was approved by the State Forestry Bureau in December 2017. An acceptance inspection, expected to occur after the work is largely completed in 2022, will score 21 indicators in seven catogories and determine whether the park is qualified for national status.

Before the new park is fully accessible, Hengqin Mangzhou Wetland Park and the 13.6-km (8.45-mile) Hengqin Flower Corridor, both up and running, may be visited.
