Several world-renowned university rowing teams will battle with the Student Union of the University of Macao in a race down the Tianmu River in Hengqin New Area on Sunday, Dec 1.

Yale, Tsinghua, Peking, Zhejiang, Tongji, Xi'an Jiaotong, Xidian, and Sun Yat-sen universities will compete in coxed eights (8+) or coxless fours (4X) shells in the 2019 Tinmuk Rowing Regatta. The race distance is 1,000 m (1,094 yd).

In addition to the university teams, the event will also see race clubs Israeli Daniel, Beijing TsingTing, Shenzhen Hegret, Wuhan Ailang, and Guangzhou Irowing as well as more than 100 master contestants.

The origin of the modern boat race is believed to have been the confrontation between Oxford and Cambridge in 1829. Since then, the annual race has attracted nearly 300,000 onlookers to the River Thames every Easter holiday. Riding the tide, Harvard and Yale, Tsinghua and Peking, among others, also introduced interscholastic boat rivalries.

The Hsiang-shan area where Zhongshan, Zhuhai, and Macao are located has remarkable ties to the sport. In 1829, sailors of the British East India Co held China's first such race there. Years later, Hsiang-shan native Zhong Wenyao, then an overseas Chinese student in the US serving the team as coxswain, led Yale to victory over Harvard in both 1880 and 1881.
