High-performance computing talks inspire Hengqin zone
One of the world's most significant conferences in the field of high-performance computing was held Oct 21 to 23 and is seen as a springboard for the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin to take a lead in developing the field.
More than 1,800 experts, scholars, corporate application developers, and professionals from scientific research institutions and universities met at the Zhuhai International Convention & Exhibition Center in Shizimen for the 17th China Computer Federation's National Annual Conference on High Performance Computing (HPC China 2021).
They were briefed on the cooperation zone's development, industrial foundation, business and living environment as well as supportive policies and measures on high-tech industries, taxes, and tariffs. Zhang Ge, head of the local Economic Development Bureau, said the zone is innovating cross-border fiscal management and data flow, and market access.

The zone expressed intent to use the event to gradually build a technological achievement transformation and industry cultivation base. This would incorporate innovative technology research and development, business incubation, and technical talent introduction. It would also position artificial intelligence as the mainstay, integrating integrated circuits, big data, cloud computing, and other industries into a new highland in the digital economy industry.
The conference held more than 40 seminars and forums on quantum computing, big data, SaaS (Software as a Service) applications, HPC, visual analysis, numerical simulation, heterogeneous computing, programing model and optimization, sparse matrix computing, and HPC open-source software stack. Quantum computing, carbon neutrality, east-to-west data computing, and the "metaverse" were also addressed.
Chinese Academy of Sciences members Chen Guoliang, Chen Ruisheng, Fan Wenfei, and Tang Tao, as well as Chinese Academy of Engineering academician Sun Ninghui delivered speeches at the opening ceremony. Intel, AMD, Nvidia, Huawei, Dell, and Amazon were among 50 enterprises to display products at the 5,000-sqm (5,980-sq-yd) innovative technology exhibition.
Founded in 2005, HPC China is one of three major academic conferences in the field of high-performance computing in the world. It provides the means to discuss industrial development trends, display innovative technological applications, pioneer academic achievements, and upgrade and digitalize transformation of the HPC sector.
The conference was organized by the China Computer Federation's HPC Technical Committee, Jinan University, University of Macau, and Macau University of Science & Technology with support from the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone Executive Committee and Zhuhai government.
Home to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area's first advanced intelligent computing center, Hengqin has been chosen to host the largest, highest-level, and strongest technical conference in the field of high-performance computing in China from Oct 21 to 23.
