Management committee of Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin held first meeting
On October 22, the management committee of Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin held its first meeting in Guangzhou.
In early September, China's central authorities issued a general plan for building a Guangdong-Macao in-depth cooperation zone in Hengqin that spans 106 square km. The plan defines the Zone as a new platform to boost Macao's appropriate economic diversification, a new space that provides convenience to Macao residents' life and employment, a new model to enrich the practice of "one country, two systems," as well as a new high ground for building the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
On September 17, the management committee of the cooperation zone was inaugurated. Governor Ma Xingrui of Guangdong Province and Ho Iat Seng, chief executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), serve as the directors.
Ma said at the meeting that efforts should be taken to optimize the management mechanism of the Zone and work out the working list for primary tasks. Moreover, Ma insisted that next, the Zone will introduce large enterprises and projects and launch significant innovation policies so as to further the construction of the cooperation zone.
Ho stated that the Zone should strive to develop the real economy such as healthcare, modern finance, high technology, exhibition, culture and sport, attract talent at home and abroad, and bring in quality education, health resources and community services. A legal system should be built under which rules governing civil and commercial affairs are linked with those in Macao and integrated with international rules, Ho added.
