Hengqin Tunnel cited as feat of Guangdong engineering
The Hengqin Tunnel has earned the highest sci-tech innovation prize for civil engineering projects in Guangdong Province -- the 13th Zhan Tianyou Hometown Cup -- Zhuhai Da Heng Qin Group announced Oct 24.
The two-way six-lane tunnel is 2,244 m (2,454 yd) long under the Maliuzhou Waterway connecting the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation and Zhuhai Free Trade zones. Initially called the Maliuzhou Tunnel, it runs from Central Avenue in the south of Hengqin (Financial Island) to Nanwan Avenue up north (Shizimen Central Business District).

It is the first submersed tunnel in the country to have required an ultra-large shield tunneling machine bore through composite stratums. The process gave rise to five invention patents, five national utility model patents, 19 papers, and two software copyrights.
In addition, an ingenious placement of utility tunnels beneath the driving lanes helped eliminate costs for submarine cables and dedicated tunnels for pipelines. And operator Da Heng Qin Utility Tunnel adopted a "smart" monitoring system to ensure day-to-day operation and emergency rescues.
The Zhan Tianyou Hometown Cup was founded in 2009 to commemorate the Forefather of China's Railroads (also known as Jeme Tien-yow or Chan T'ien-yu), who was born in Guangzhou in 1861. Also seen as the Guangdong Provincial Civil Engineering Award, it recognizes annually up to 15 projects that excel in sci-tech innovation and application after review by Guangdong Civil Engineering and Architectural Society experts.
The tunnel also has earned the 17th China's Zhan Tianyou Civil Engineering Prize, China's Lu Ban Award for Construction Projects, and Guangdong Quality Construction Structure Award.
Opened to traffic in November 2018, the Hengqin Tunnel serves as the third arterial road between Hengqin and downtown Zhuhai along with the Hengqin Bridge and Second Hengqin Bridge. Motorists using it will have direct access to the upcoming Jiangjun Mt Tunnel, the Xianghai Bridge, and Jinqin Express Road.
Trial operations of the submerged Hengqin Tunnel – Zhuhai's first underwater passageway and the first sea-area composite large-diameter shield tunnel in China -- commenced on Nov 1.
