"Academician" is the highest academic title for science workers in China, and the prestigious list is updated every two years.

Lin, who is 63, had participated in construction of the cross-sea bridge since preliminary studies in 2005. For 12 years he spent most of his time in Zhuhai, away from his family in Beijing, and has been named a Zhuhai honorary citizen. He is originally from Xinghua in Jiangsu Province.

During that time, his team had to overcome numerous technical problems. A world-leading technology system was established for offshore immersed tube tunnel construction with independent intellectual property rights.

The chief engineer innovatively proposed to pile 120 sand-filled giant steel cylinders into the seabed to form White Dolphin and Blue Dolphin islands where the bridge dips into a tunnel. His part of project was completed in 221 days, two and a half years ahead of schedule, and sediment excavation was reduced by nearly 10 million cubic meters.

In addition, Lin won the Fourth China Quality Award in September. He was invited to speak at an awards ceremony in Hangzhou on innovative technologies and management practices used in the island-tunnel construction.

As of October, HZMB Zhuhai Port received more than 21 million passengers and over 3.1 million vehicles since opening to traffic on Oct 23, 2018.

A 1981 graduate of the Nanjing Shipping School (later absorbed into Southeast University), Lin has said, "We must create a 'first in the unique' with our Chinese wisdom and bravery."
